Use even weight to help keep the tuck strands taut enough to knit smoothly.
When establishing your stitch pattern, Check to confirm the tuck stitches knit correctly on the Closing Row

As you are knitting, pull the work down now and then.
Even if you have the work weighted properly, the tuck stitches tend to gather up and get caught.

Which side is the right side???
Your choice! That's the beauty of many tuck stitch patterns, they are reversible!

You can't tuck 2 needles side by side
This is true for many automatic patterning machines (punchcard or electronic), but some machiens WILL allow you to tuck across 2 stitches. Notice how the tuck travels between the 2 needles. Knit carefully for success.

Having trouble knitting with tuck?
  • Knit fewer tuck rows - less strands = easier knitting
  • Knit the closing row manually. Hand knit each stitch to ensure the tucks knit properly. After manually knitting one row, Cancel hold on the carriage, pull the needles all the way out and carefully knit the next row.

Tuck stitch patterns are wider than stockinette.
They allow you to knit wider pieces, minimizing the Needlebed Limitations (total number of needles available).

Tuck stitch patterns are shorter than stockinette.
You'll need to knit more rows for the same length.

Tuck stitch takes more yarn than other stitch patterns
Plan accordingly

Avoid tucking the end needles.
End Needle Selection Do not tuck the end 1-2 needles for easier seaming and a neater edge.
