You don't NEED to use yarn on cones for machine knitting

But ... if you prefer to use cones, here are some sources.

Holst Garn from Denmark sells wool and wool blends on cones. I’ve been knitting with the super soft lately. It feels scratchy and looks small when knitting as it still has spinning oils on it. But once you have knitted and washed the garment, it is wonderfully soft and full. www.holstgarn.dk

yarnery.com - tried it.Comes up with two yarns on cones. The fingering weight, cotton/wool blend looks good, and it's machine washable, too! Jamieson in Shetland Isles do fabulous yarn (all oiled Shetland wool) in a fantastic range of colours and tones.

JC Rennie - Knitrennie.com. Scottish spun Shetland, oiled cones 500g and 800g and hand knitting balls. They have various weights inc 4 ply and chunky plus a cashmere mix. I've used this a lot and have always been pleased with the results. Lots of colour choice and very reasonable prices. Ideal for fair isle as you can mix hand balls when small amounts are needed with the larger cones.
